“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”
—Psalm 119:11
I wonder how many times believers have sinned in the day of persecution, tribulation, sickness, or death because the Word of God was not dwelling in them richly? When God’s Word is not in our heart, we do not know how to respond correctly to the trials that come upon us in this life, and so, by default, we respond sinfully. The psalmist said, “Thy Word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee.” When the psalmist said, “Thy Word” he is referring to God’s Word. This is clear from Psalm 119:1, “Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD.” “Thy” refers to the Lord. It is God’s Word that the psalmist hid in his heart.
And the Lord to whom the psalmist refers is the great I AM that Moses wrote about in Exodus 3. It is the name that declares to us that God is the eternal One, the faithful One, the One who alone is sovereign in power. “I am that I am” says to us that there are no changes in God. Malachi 3:6, “For I am the LORD, I do not change.” God is the eternal One and therefore His Word is eternal. Jesus said in Matthew 24:35, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My word will never pass away.” And Peter declared, “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever” (1 Peter 2:24-25).
When you hide God’s Word in your heart you are hiding a Word that never needs correction or revision because it is the Word of the eternal, almighty, faithful God of heaven and earth, the God who is, who was, and who ever shall be, who alone is to be worshiped, praised, and honored. Beloved, we have that eternal Word, the Bible. Do you treat the Word of God as a precious treasure? The things we treasure we protect and take special care of. How much do you treasure the Scriptures? How much time do you spend hiding it in your heart? Is your greatest desire in this life to not sin against the Lord? If so, then do you spend time memorizing Scripture and teaching your children to memorize it? Children, would you say your parents treat the Word of God as a precious treasure?
May our gracious Lord grant His people a renewed desire for His glory and a burning zeal to know Him in a greater way through His holy, inspired, inerrant Word. To God be the glory, great things He has done!
