FILLING YOUR HEART WITH GOD’S WORD
“Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You!”
—Psalm 119:11
Scripture admonishes every believer to store up God’s Word in their heart. “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly” (Col. 3:16). In Matthew 4:4, Jesus taught that we live “by every Word that comes from the mouth of God.” John tells us in 1 John 2 “to let the Word of God abide in us.” And Jesus said in John 8 that His disciples are those who have “the Word of God abiding in them.” And we read in Psalm 119:11, “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You!”
Our text teaches us the importance of storing God’s Word in our heart so that we will not sin against our God, and we do this by memorizing Scripture. Through memorization the Holy Spirit writes the Word of God upon our heart and in this way the Holy Spirit guides our lives by His Word. That is why the psalmist wrote in Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” You see, without the Word of God dwelling in our heart we will never be able to live a life that pleases the Lord.
It is not the closed Bible at home that gives you strength when the doctor gives you the news that cancer has filled your body, or when you are told of the death of a loved one. Nor is it the unread Bible that gives you strength to avoid the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life. It is the Word of God stored up in your heart that gives you strength to fight against the world, the flesh, and the Devil. In the same way, only Scripture can give you comfort and joy to persevere amidst the adversities that come upon us in this fallen, sin-cursed world.
And so, regarding the commandments of the Lord, Solomon wrote, “Bind them continually upon your heart; Tie them around your neck. When you roam, they will lead you; When you sleep, they will keep you; And when you awake, they will speak with you. For the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light; reproofs of instruction are the way of life, to keep you from the evil woman, from the flattering tongue of a seductress” (Proverbs 6:21-24). Do you practice hiding God’s Word in your heart? If not, begin today, and if so, continue pressing on!

A CHRISTIAN'S SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER
MY FATHER AND MY GOD,
You are the Sovereign of the universe: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, ruling and reigning according to Your good pleasure and purpose.
You are majestic in holiness, awesome in power, and infinite in knowledge and wisdom.
I am humbled that You are mindful of me, even as David declared in Psalm 8, "What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?"
Heavenly Father, You have planned all things in Heaven and on earth.
You have given a multitude of sinners to Christ to be redeemed by Him.
And You have loved these elect sinners by giving Christ to them as their Rock, Redeemer, Refuge, and Great Shepherd.
Lord Jesus, You have redeemed me, reconciled me, forgiven me, cleansed me, washed me, adopted me, and justified me.
Holy Spirit, You have regenerated my soul and are presently sanctifying me.
And You provide me with all things necessary for life and godliness, both body and soul.
Lord Jesus, I know that all I have need of You provide, because You are my Good Shepherd Who cares for His sheep.
You have promised to care for Your sheep. By Your perfect righteousness and shed blood, I am a sheep of Your pasture.
O Lord Jesus, shepherd my wandering heart; conform me more and more into Your likeness!
Holy Spirit, You have taken me off the broad road that leads to destruction and set my feet upon the narrow road that leads to life.
You have rescued me from the muck and mire and set my feet upon the Rock, Christ Jesus!
You have caused me to know and believe Your truth and have blessed me with the godly desire to continually reject the lies of Satan, sin, and this fallen world, which is under Satan's rule.
You continually teach me Your truth and reveal Yourself to me more and more as You cause me to grow in the likeness of Jesus Christ, my wonderful Savior.
You cause me to walk in wisdom.
You humble me in Your sight.
You teach me to love You, Your Word, my brothers and sisters in Christ, my neighbors, and even my enemies.
Forgive me for not loving well. Teach me to love better, Lord Jesus, as You are incarnate love.
Heavenly Father, I am not worthy of the least of Your blessings and truth.
I am needy, helpless, and hopeless apart from Your grace in Jesus Christ!
In and of myself, I am only worthy of damnation for I have broken all Your commandments in thought, word, and deed.
Yet in a gracious wonder, I don't stand before You in and of myself but I am in Christ, united to Him forever, and am covered and clothed by His righteousness, holiness, and perfect satisfaction.
Therefore, You love me for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, the One Who has fulfilled all the righteous requirements of Your Law in my place.
Lord Jesus, You are the One who went to the cross and suffered for all my sins; You are the One Who was condemned in my place and on my behalf. You arose from the dead, which declared, Heavenly Father, that You received Christ's atoning work on my behalf and on behalf of all that You have given to Christ.
Praise the Lord, I am eternally forgiven, blessed, loved, and cared for because of Jesus!
Because of Jesus, I have everlasting life!
Because of Jesus, I am washed and adopted into the family of God, and my name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life!
Oh, how I love Jesus!
O God, I am humbled by Your love, grace, mercy, and Your sustaining and transforming work of sanctification.
Lord Jesus, use me up for Your glory!
Fill me, Holy Spirit, with Your presence and power and fruit.
Forgive me, Lord, when I sin against You in thought, word, and deed, and humble me when I walk in obedience.
I am forever thankful that You loved me from before the foundation of the world, that You love me now, and that You will continually love me and provide for me and have promised to never leave me nor forsake me, all because of Jesus!
Father, I am humbled and thankful to be one of Your adopted children.
As the song writer wrote, "Not because of who I am, but because of what You've done! Not because of what I've done, but because of who You are!" I am forgiven, washed, cleansed, blessed, loved, adopted, cared for, reconciled, declared righteous, being sanctified, etc, etc, "because of what You've done," Lord Jesus, and "because of who You are!"
Hallelujah! What A Savior!
Hear my prayer for Jesus' sake!
Amen!
