TRUE FAITH REVEALED

“Therefore, I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers.” —Ephesians 1:15-16

IN OUR TEXT, the Apostle Paul highlights two qualities in the lives of the believers at Ephesus that caused his heart to rejoice in thanksgiving to God: their faith and love. These two virtues are always the test of a genuine believer. The Apostle John wrote, “We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death” (1 John 3:14).

WHEN PAUL SPEAKS of their faith, he is referring to their believing the truth of God’s Word and their trust in the person and work of Jesus Christ for salvation. And these two things always go together. Saving faith always involves believing the truth of God’s Word and trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ. “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation” (Eph. 1:13).

WHAT WE NEED to realize is that the Ephesian Christians lived in a society like ours. A society where people could believe anything they wanted if they didn’t force their beliefs on others. It was a society where you could worship any “god” you pleased if you didn’t say your “god” is the only “god” or your way of salvation is the only way. But amidst this ungodly society, the believers at Ephesus were manifesting true saving faith by believing and living the truth of God’s Word and trusting in the person and work of Jesus Christ as the only way of salvation, even though it would cost many their lives.

IS THIS TRUE of us? Do people know us as those who stand on the truth of God’s Word no matter what the culture says or what the cost may be? Do people we encounter know that we believe Jesus Christ is the only way of salvation, not one way among many, but the only way to Heaven!? This is unpopular to say today, but if we believe God’s Word this is what we will believe and confess, no matter what the culture believes!
