TROUBLE IN THIS WORLD

Sickness, suffering, cancer, death, tribulation, trials are all inevitable in this fallen world. The Bible tells us that “man is born unto trouble as the sparks fly upward” (Job 5:7). We also read in Job 14:1, “Man who is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble.” The Apostle Paul wrote that “all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution” (2 Tim. 3:12). And Jesus said in Matthew 18:7, “Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!”

Because of sin, our life in this world is filled with times and seasons of trouble, trials, affliction, and persecution. However, Job teaches us that no matter what happens to us in this life our responsibility, joy, and privilege is to say, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there. The Lord gave, the Lord has taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21).

Dear Christian, when you’re discouraged because of a season of suffering, persecution, or some other trial, always remember the words of the Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 4:17, “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.” And the comforting words of our Lord Jesus Christ, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). It’s because our Lord Jesus Christ overcame the world that the Apostle Paul tells every believer that “we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:37). Therefore, no matter what may come upon us in this life we have the promise of God that nothing in all creation “shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39).

And how are we enabled to be more than conquerors? The Apostle John gives us the answer in 1 John 5:4, “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” You see, faith in Christ produces an inseparable, organic union with Christ by which the believer receives Christ and all His benefits. Because Jesus overcame death, every believer will overcome death; because Jesus conquered the world, the flesh, and the Devil, every believer will conqueror the world, the flesh, and the Devil. Because Jesus arose from the dead, every believer will arise from the dead. Because Jesus is righteous, every believer is righteous in Him. Simply stated, we overcome all things because we are inseparably united to our conquering King, Jesus Christ, the true Overcomer, and He graciously shares in His inheritance with all the sheep of His pasture. That’s why we overcome! Hallelujah! What a Savior!
