THE LORD’S DAY

The Lord’s Day is a day when the church of Jesus Christ gathers to “Give unto the LORD the glory due to His name”, and to “Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness” (Psalm 29:2). It’s a day that we “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name” (Psalm 100:4). On the Lord’s Day we meet with our God in a very special way as He walks among the lampstands and ministers to the sheep of His pasture. “To the angel of the church of Ephesus write, ‘These things says He who holds the seven stars in His right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands” (Rev. 2:1).

On the Lord’s Day, all the ransomed church of God, those in the church militant (on earth) and the church triumphant (in heaven), gathers spiritually in the unity of the true faith to exalt our King, Jesus Christ. “But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel” (Hebrews 12:22-24).

It’s a day when Christ feeds, nourishes, assures, and strengthens His redeemed with His Spirit and Word of reconciliation. He assures every believer that we are loved by God and forgiven because Jesus has purchased us body and soul with His precious blood and perfect obedience, even though we daily fail to live for His glory. The Lord’s Day is a day when the church edifies itself in love and stirs one another up in love and good works. It’s a day when the Holy Spirit causes His sheep to hear the voice of the Good Shepherd through sinful men who are proclaiming God’s holy Word. The Lord’s Day is truly a wondrous, ineffable day that the Lord has blessed His people with. As Jesus said in Mark 2:27, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.”

So, dear Christian, let us worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness, exalt His holy name, and make a joyful noise unto our God and King! May the Lord be glorified and pleased by the prayers and praises of His people!
