THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST

“Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins…”
—Galatians 1:3-4

There are many people today who teach “another Gospel” (Gal. 1:8), which is not good news. They tell us we need to trust in our works if we will be right with God. Oh, they say faith is necessary since it puts us in the race, but our works carry us across the finish line. But this is not the Gospel that the Apostle Paul teaches in our text. The Apostle Paul taught that “Christ gave Himself for our sins”, and therefore we must trust in Christ alone if we will be saved from Hell. In Acts 16:30-31, the Philippian jailor asked Paul and Silas, “What must I do to be saved?” They responded, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved!” Notice Paul did not say do this, that, or the other thing and then you’ll be saved. He did not say be baptized, join a church, pay your tithes and you will be saved. He said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.” In other words, trust in Jesus!

Do you believe the message of the Gospel? Do you believe that Christ gave Himself for your sins? The Gospel is not “do this or that” and then you’ll be saved—the Gospel is something that has already been accomplished. The Gospel is not something we do but something we believe. You see, the person and work of Jesus Christ is the Gospel. The Gospel is the Good News of the accomplished work of the Savior, Jesus Christ, on behalf of sinners. The Gospel is that Jesus has fulfilled all the righteous demands of the Law of God by His perfect law-abiding life and He has satisfied God’s holy wrath against sin by becoming a curse on the cross (Gal. 3:13) to cover the sins of all those given to Him by His Father (John 6:37).

The wonderful news is that Jesus’ perfect righteousness and sin-atoning blood is applied to all who trust in Him. As Scripture says, “Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins; and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses” (Acts 13:38-39). What about you? Are you trusting in Christ alone? If so, then you have all that is necessary unto your salvation in Christ. Keep on looking to Christ and Christ alone for “this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life” (1 John 5:11-12).
