SPIRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT

“The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints.” ~Ephesians 1:18

EVERY BELIEVER NEEDS to grow to a greater understanding and appreciation of the greatness of God’s holiness, love, grace, and mercy. One problem with many churches today is that too many professing Christians are infants in knowledge of God. The more we grow into Christ-like maturity the less we argue, fight, and complain about the little things. To be a complaining, contentious person demonstrates spiritual immaturity, not maturity. 1 Cor. 14:20, “Brethren, do not be children in understanding; however, in malice be babes, but in understanding be mature.” Ephesians 4:14, “that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting.”

PAUL’S PRAYER FOR these Ephesian Christians is that by God’s Word and Spirit they would increase in their knowledge of God. You see, increasing in the knowledge of God, and understanding in a greater way who God is and what He has done for us in Christ, is the key to Christian maturity and Christ-like humility. That’s why preaching and teaching the Word of God is indispensable in the life of the church. If we do away with strong preaching and teaching of Scripture then we will do away with knowledge of God and we will be left with weak, immature, ignorant Christians.

DO YOU PRAY for yourself and others in your congregation to know God in a greater and deeper way? Do you pray that God would give His people the spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him? Our problem with doubt, discouragement, and depression all stem from not knowing God as we ought. Our only comfort in life and death is in knowing God and that He is for us (Rom. 8:310). And the deeper we grow in our knowledge of God the more we will love Him, praise Him, thank Him, and rejoice to worship and serve Him with all our words and works!

PAUL’S PRAYER OF spiritual enlightenment will only happen as the Holy Spirit fills His sheep with His Word. That’s why it’s imperative to read the Word, meditate upon the Word, listen to the Word, be faithful in corporate worship, attend Bible Studies, and Sunday School and other opportunities to learn the Word of God. The Holy Spirit enlightens our understanding through the Word and if we are not cultivating the Word of God, we cannot know the hope of God’s calling nor can our eyes be enlightened to see the wondrous things of God.
