SEEKING THE BLESSER NOT SIMPLY THE BLESSINGS

As Christians, we are to enjoy God first and foremost in our life and not simply the things God gives us. If God sends us pain, trials, disappointment, heartache, and persecution will we still enjoy our life? When all the goodies are gone will we still enjoy the breath we breathe, a beautiful sunset, a warm rain shower, or the first winter’s snowfall? Yes, we enjoy what God gives, and rightly so, but the blessings must not be primary. Enjoying God, His presence, His glory, His character, His attributes, and His person must be primary in the life of those who are redeemed from all their sin and misery by Jesus Christ. We must seek the One who blesses and not merely the blessings He bestows.

One day God will take away all our goodies, what then if God Himself is not our chief enjoyment in life? Let us hear and heed the words of Habakkuk regarding this matter, “Though the fig tree may not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines; though the labor of the olive may fail, and the fields yield no food; though the flock may be cut off from the fold, and there be no herd in the stalls; yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation” (Habakkuk 3:17-18).
