SALT AND LIGHT

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

—Matthew 5:13-14

Dear Christian,

Living in this fallen, sinful world and working and dialoguing with unbelievers is our Christian calling. The Lord has called us to be salt and light in this dark world (Matthew 5:13-16; Eph. 5:8-13). You might be the instrument the Lord uses to bring salvation to one of your co-workers, family members, friends, or acquaintances. Jesus ate and drank with tax collectors and sinners in order to bring them truth, love, and compassion. And in John 17:15, Jesus prayed these words to His heavenly Father concerning His disciples, “I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.”

As believers, we are in this world but not of this world (John 17:11, 16). We do not embrace this world’s philosophy, ideology, psychology, or atheism. But we are those called, equipped, and commissioned to be zealous in “casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ” (2 Cor. 10:5). We are called to go out into this world and evangelize lost sinners with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to command all men everywhere to repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 17:30).

Yes, it’s a difficult calling, but as Christians we have the almighty power of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God giving us strength and wisdom. Therefore, ask the Lord to cause you to see your calling to labor amongst unbelievers as your Christian duty. Ask Him to cause you to see and understand through the lens of Scripture how you are to interact and speak with a salty, gracious, compassionate tongue the Gospel of Christ. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with His presence and power to enable you to walk in wisdom towards unbelievers.

Be bold!

Be confident!

Be courageous!

Be humble!

Be zealous!

Be compassionate!

Be as wise as a serpent and harmless as a dove!

And always remember, the Lord our God is with you wherever you go!
