OUR DAILY PRIORITY

As the redeemed of Jesus Christ, let us remember to keep first things first. Jesus calls us to "seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things [daily provisions] shall be added to you" (Matthew 6:33). Therefore, we must begin each day seeking the Lord by searching out the Word of the Lord. In this way, we understand how we are to carry out kingdom work for Christ's glory and the good of His church. We learn how to "do good to all men but especially to those who are of the household of faith" (Gal. 6:10).

Another daily priority is to be faithful in prayer to the Lord. The Heidelberg Catechism, Q&A 116, tells us that prayer is the "chief part of thankfulness which God requires of us." Prayer is also a means of grace by which the Holy Spirit changes our thinking and brings it into accord with God's Word. Reading Scripture teaches us that we are to pray according to God's revealed will, which is His Word. The Apostle John wrote in 1 John 5:14, "Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us." Prayer is also our means of godly lament as we cast upon the Lord our fears, cares, and desires knowing that "the Lord cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7).

One more encouragement is found in Matthew 6:25-26, where Jesus tells us not to be people who worry. "Therefore, I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?" In other words, God will take care of you. He knows what each of us needs and has promised to meet our every need. Not necessarily our wants, but certainly our necessities. Trust Him as your Good Shepherd who showers us daily with blessings. As the psalmist wrote, "Blessed be the Lord, Who daily loads us with benefits, the God of our salvation" (Psalm 68:19).

Remember the words of the hymn writer, Civilla D. Martin, "Be not dismayed whate'er betide, God will take care of you. Beneath His wings of love abide, God will take care of you. Through every day, o'er all the way, He will take care of you, God will take care of you! No matter what may be the test, God will take care of you. Lean, weary one, upon His breast, God will take care of you. Through every day, o'er all the way, He will take care of you, God will take care of you!”
