OUR LAMP AND LIGHT

“Thy Word Is A Lamp Unto My Feet, And A Light Unto My Path.”
—Psalm 119:105

Our text declares, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” This must be the confession of every believer because it says something about our view of Scripture and the role of Scripture in our life. To have this as your confession is to believe that Scripture is completely the pure Word of God without error and it is your only guide in matters of faith and life. Proverbs 30:5, “Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.” We read in Psalm 12:6, “The words of the LORD are pure words, like silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.” And once again in Psalm 19:7-9, “The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.”

Is this your view of Scripture? Do you make the same confession as the psalmist in our text? If so, then praise God because you could never truly make this confession unless you were born of the Spirit of God and given true faith in Jesus Christ. As Jesus said in John 8:47, “He that is of God heareth the words of God.” However, the person who is spiritually dead does not hear God’s Word and therefore would never confess, “Thy Word is my lamp and light.” The fallen, unregenerate man always despises the Word of God. The Apostle Paul said to the unbeliever, Elymas the magician, in Acts 13:10, “You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?” The unbeliever is at war with the Word of God. We read in Romans 8:7, “The carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.” Therefore, in order to truly make the confession that God’s Word “Is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path”, we need the grace of the Holy Spirit working in our heart to convince us of the truth of Scripture.

There is no other reliable lamp to our feet and light to our path than the perfect, inspired, infallible, inerrant, illuminating Word of God! So study the Word of God and let it guide and direct you in all your decisions in life so that you might truly say with the psalmist, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Amen!

In Christ,
