OBEDIENCE AND SUBMISSION

“Obey them that have the rule over you and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.”
—Hebrews 13:17

“OBEY THOSE who rule over you and be submissive” is a difficult text for us to hear because of remaining sin. Because of sin, mankind rebels against any type of rule over his life and to be submissive is something we desire others to be toward us and not us toward others. When you hear the words authority or submission what comes to your mind? Do you immediately welcome them as pleasant words or do you rise in protest? We live in a society that has a rebellious spirit towards authority, a society that exalts individual rights and thinks submission is something for the weak. Every man wants to be his own boss.

AND SO often this spirit of rebellion against authority is seen in the church. Think of how many professing Christians have left a church rather than submit to the rule of the elders, or how many pastors and elders have destroyed a church because they have not learned to submit to the brethren. But against this spirit of rebellion, God commands us in Hebrews 13:17 to “Obey those who rule over you and be submissive.” And this command is profitable for us. The Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 3:16: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

THE GREEK words for obey and submit mean just that: obey and submit. The difference between the two words is that obedience implies heeding direction or commands, whereas submission involves the attitude. You see, a person can obey outwardly while at the same time rebelling on the inside, but that’s not Biblical submission. To obey those who rule over you is willingly doing what is required of you because you know God commands you to be submissive to your rulers. Jesus said in Luke 10:16 of those whom He had commissioned to preach and teach His Word, “He who hears you hears Me, he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.” In other words, to reject those who rule in the name of Christ and with the Word of Christ is to reject Christ.

WHAT IS your attitude about those whom God has providentially placed over you? Are you obedient and submissive for the Lord’s sake or do you rebel against the officers in the church? Can you truly say that you willingly submit to our text, “Obey those who rule over you and be submissive”? This must be our attitude because this is the will of God. Take time today to examine your heart concerning this issue of obedience and submission.
