JESUS HAS OPENED MY EYES

Revisiting Charles H. Spurgeon’s conversion on this day, January 4, 1850
—Matthew R. Perry

“Young man, you look very miserable, and you always will be miserable–miserable in life, miserable in death–if you don’t obey my text; but if you obey this moment, you will be saved. Young man, look to Jesus Christ. Look! Look! Look! You have nothin’ to do but to look and live.”

This substitute preacher, preaching from Isaiah 45:22, implored a newcomer into their church service to “Look! Look! Look!” The 15-year-old Charles H. Spurgeon was in much spiritual distress. He ducked into this Methodist church because the blizzard prevented him from going to his usual church. The regular preacher could not make it either, so a deacon who was inexperienced as a preacher but experienced in the work of the gospel, began preaching all he could.

How did Spurgeon respond? In his Autobiography, he noted, “I saw at once the way of salvation. I know not what else he said–I did not take much notice of it–I was so possessed with that one thought.” Soon after, he wrote this in a letter to his father:

“I am most happy and comfortable, I could not be more so whilst so-journing on earth, “like a pilgrim or a stranger, as all my fathers were.” Oh, how unprofitable has my past life been! Oh, that I should have been so long time blind to those celestial wonders, which now I can in a measure behold! Who can refrain from speaking of the marvellous love of Jesus which, I hope, has opened mine eyes. Now I see Him, I can firmly trust to Him for my eternal salvation.”

On this January 6, may we remember this day as the day in 1850 that Christ changed the heart of one who would be used to change the hearts of so many others.”
