DOERS, NOT SIMPLY HEARERS

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
—James 1:22

ONE OF THE clearest marks of a true believer is an ever present desire to walk in obedience to God’s Word. Jesus said in John 8:31, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.” And the Apostle John wrote in 3 John vss. 3-4, “For I rejoiced greatly when brethren came and testified of the truth that is in you, just as you walk in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.” John’s point is clear; believers walk in the truth of God’s Word, not in practical perfection, but certainly the Word of God is the practical direction of the believer’s life.

JAMES TELLS US that a true believer not only receives the Word of God with meekness, but he also strives to respond to every situation in life by obedience to God’s Word. James is concerned with the practical business of living out the Christian life and so he says if you’re simply a hearer of the Word and not a doer then you are deceiving yourself about your salvation. You see, we are saved by God’s grace in order that we might glorify the God of our salvation by walking in good works. “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Eph. 2:10).

ARE YOU STRIVING to walk in accordance with the Word of Truth or are you just a talker but not a walker of the Truth? “So speak and so do as those who will be judged by the law of liberty” (James 2:12).
