“Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD!”
—Psalm 119:1
WHAT’S YOUR ATTITUDE towards the Word of God? Is it a burden to you? Is it something you can live without? Jesus said in Matthew 11:28 that His commandments are not burdensome. He also said in Luke 11:28, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it!” And the psalmist wrote that the happy person is the one who hears and obeys the Word of God, and as a result he walks in an undefiled way. This doesn’t mean that the believer is sinless; to be undefiled means to walk uprightly and avoid living perversely in your words and works because you live according to the Law of God.
PSALM 119:101, “I HAVE restrained my feet from every evil way, that I may keep Your Word.” The psalmist avoided evil in order to keep the Word of God, and God’s Word was the very means that kept him from evil. And we must understand that the psalmist lived according to God’s Word out of a heart of thanksgiving because he was one of God’s redeemed people. Notice that he didn’t obey to become one of God’s children; rather he kept the Word of God because he was a redeemed child of God. Therefore, as the Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 7:22, the psalmist could declare, “I delight in the law of God according to the inward man.”
DOES THIS DESCRIBE YOU? Is the Word of God your delight? Are you one who walks according to the Word of God out of a thankful heart because you’re one of the Lord’s redeemed people? If so, then you will declare with the psalmist, “Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD!” (Psalm 119:1).
