CORPORATE WORSHIP

“And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.”

—Hebrews 10:24-25

AS THOSE redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ, the writer to the Hebrews exhorts believers to be faithful in corporate worship of the true and living God. We are called to “consider one another” in order to stir up love and good works, and this is done as we gather on the Lord’s Day to praise God through our Lord Jesus Christ. To “consider one another” is from the Greek word “katanoeo”, which means “to observe carefully.” As members of the same body, we must pay attention to one another so that we might care for each other’s spiritual needs. We are also called to “stir up love and good works.” This means we are to “incite or provoke” one another in a good sense to godly love and good works. This is the fuel that the Holy Spirit uses to energize the Church of Jesus Christ in her mission of mercy.

OUR SUBMISSION to God’s Word, mutual worship, prayer, and fellowship are the gracious means used by the Lord, “according to the effective working by which every part does its share, which causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love” (Eph. 4:16). Therefore, if the church is going to grow spiritually and be a healthy flock of Jesus Christ then it is imperative that we “not forsake the assembling of ourselves together” on the Lord’s Day “as is the manner of some.”

HOW FAITHFUL are you in corporate worship of the Lord? Do other things come before corporate worship on the Lord’s Day? Are you faithful to the admonishment of our text to “consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together” or are you among “the manner of some” who forsakes gathering with the church when she meets on the Lord’s Day to praise God through Jesus Christ? Examine your heart in this matter because Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15); and, as you know, our text is the commandment of Christ. How well is your love for Christ demonstrated with regards to our text?
