GOD’S WORD IN OUR HEART

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”
—Psalm 119:11

The psalmist had a great purpose in treasuring God’s Word in his heart. Notice he says, “Thy word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against Thee.” He wanted to live a holy life, a life pleasing and honoring to God. Simply stated, he wanted to live his life for God. And if we want to live our life for God then we will follow the psalmist’s example and treasure the Word of God in our heart because it is only when God’s Word is in our heart that will we have the strength to resist sin. The psalmist understood that it was the Spirit and Scripture in his heart that was the means to live a holy life and the source to overcome the sinful thoughts and activities that grieved his soul and dishonored the God he loves.

Do you know the struggle against sin? Do you ask what can keep you away from the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life? The answer is God’s Word in your heart. You see, it was the Word of God in the heart that made the psalmist sensitive about sinning against God, and he looked to the Scriptures as the only defense against sin. “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” And if we are going to avoid sinning against God and our neighbor then we too must hide God’s Word in our heart. We must take the time to memorize and meditate upon God’s Word because the Scriptures are what the Holy Spirit uses to strengthen us spiritually and cause our conscience to be sensitive against sin. The Holy Spirit uses the Scriptures to cleanse our heart. Jesus told his disciples, "You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you” (John 15:3).

Take time today to cultivate the Word of God in your heart so that you will be enabled to resist sinning against the Lord.

In Christ,

A CHRISTIAN'S SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER

MY FATHER & MY GOD,

You alone are my God, the Triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are awesome in holiness, majestic in power, and wondrous in wisdom.
You are all-wise, all-powerful, and everywhere present.
You uphold the universe that You created with the Word of Your power (Heb. 1:3).
You alone are awesome. Nothing and no one can be compared to You.
"To whom then will you liken God? Or what likeness will you compare to Him? (Isa. 40:18).
And again, "Remember the former things of old, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me" (Isa. 46:9).

O God, You are wondrous in truth, goodness, justice, and mercy.
You are amazing in grace, mercy, love, and redemption.
Lord Jesus, You alone can save sinners from sin, death, and Hell.
Holy Spirit, You alone can regenerate the soul and create faith within the heart and impart everlasting life.
Thank You, Heavenly Father, for salvation!
Thank You for granting me and all Your elect mercy and grace!
Thank You for giving me to Christ and giving Christ to me!
You are infinitely holy, just, merciful, kind, loving, gracious, and long-suffering with Your people.
You forgive the sins of those who love You, and You punish evil doers who hate You.

Father, I love You!
My love is not what it ought to be but I do have love in my heart for You and it is growing thanks to the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit!
This is evidence of my salvation since I could not love You apart from the Holy Spirit shedding the love of God abroad in my heart (Rom. 5:5).
I could not love You apart from the Holy Spirit regenerating my soul!
Increase my love for You. Grant me greater and more consistent obedience!
Give me, Holy Spirit, greater understanding of Your Word!
Teach me so that I might walk in Your ways!
Guide me, O great Jehovah, since I am simply a pilgrim in a weary land.

Help me, Father! I am a sinful, weak, fragile, frail, and vulnerable Christian!
I fall short every day in thought, word, and deed!
Forgive me! Cleanse me! Revive me again, O Lord!
Use me for Your glory and service!
I take the words of John Calvin as my own, "My heart I offer to you, O Lord, promptly and sincerely."
I need You every hour to uphold me! I need the conviction of the Holy Spirit!

O Holy Spirit, I need Your abiding presence since You alone give me the assurance that I am a child of God (Rom. 8:16).
I need Your constant forgiveness as I have not reflected Your glory as I ought!
I need Your continual abiding presence and Your face shining upon me lest I slip into despair and depression!
O Lord, keep me from sinning against You. Don't let me drift; don't let me slip; don't let me wander; don't let me fall away from You.
As the hymn writer wrote, "Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; here’s my heart; O take and seal it; seal it for thy courts above."
And as David wrote, "Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, and I shall be innocent of great transgression" (Psalm 19:13).

O Lord Jesus, I need You every moment of every hour!
Walk with me and keep me in Your constant care!
Do not let me sin against You in my thoughts, words, or works!
Do not let me wander from Your sheepfold!
Discipline me when I stray; humble me when I obey!
Revive me again, O Lord, to serve You with zeal and vigor, faithfulness, and humility!
Forgive me for my rebellion against You for all sin is rebellion!
Use me up for Your kingdom and glory!
O Lord Jesus, strengthen me, bless me, fill me with Your Spirit and Word!
Guard, Guide, and Protect me, O Great Shepherd of the Sheep!

In Your name, Lord Jesus, I pray!
Amen!
